Whether promoting sporting events, concerts, touring global exhibitions, live shows and theatre, one-off major events or whole touring spectaculars, Tony Cochrane’s passion and experience forge a formidable combination and have ultimately resulted in some unforgettable milestones in entertainment and sport generally over the past 40 years both in Australia and on the global stage.
Tony has made the stage his own from the Gold Coast in Australia – not only with the formation and execution of V8 Supercars, but along the way he has collected a Tony Award (for Producer, Hairspray on Broadway), three ARIA’s, three platinum albums, and is internationally recognized for his efforts in taking V8 Supercars to the world.
Over the past forty-five years with partners and solo, Tony has produced and promoted over 400 sporting and entertainment events throughout the world, sold in excess of 25,000,000 tickets with gross sales exceeding two billion dollars, and written nearly $250,000,000 in sponsorship sales. Not bad for a kid who never finished high school!
Specifically, Tony has produced tours by a roll call of contemporary artists including Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Sammy Davis Jr., The Rolling Stones, John Farnham, Anthony Warlow, Clive James, Whitney Houston, Steve Winwood, The Beach Boys, Placido Domingo, Cold Chisel – to name but a few.
Tony’s credits include, The Ultimate Event with Frank, Liza and Sammy, Grease – The Arena Spectacular and the massively popular Main Event starring John Farnham, Olivia Newton-John and Anthony Warlow. Credits also include the reformation of Oz icons Cold Chisel Last Wave of Summer tour; the hugely successful Australian tour of The Sound of Music, Annie, The Producers and the Tony Award winning Broadway hit…Hairspray, for which he and his fellow Producers won a Tony for Best Musical.
In his time as Executive Chairman of V8 Supercars, Tony Cochrane was considered the founding father of the ‘modern’ era of motor racing in Australia, the touring car category that was arguably amongst the world’s best. With an earlier career spent promoting major entertainment events, concerts, live shows and theatre, Cochrane came from unlikely roots to lead the revival of what is now a global brand.
In May of 1996, Cochrane met with all of the then team owners at HSV in Melbourne and proposed his idea of forming the Australian V8 Supercar Championship Series (AVESCO, now V8 Supercars), funding this decision with a $52,500 outlay.
During this period V8 Supercars had an extraordinary rise to the top of sport within Australia and on the world motorsport scene. It became a multimillion-dollar industry under his strong leadership.
In 2012, Cochrane and his then partners sold the business of V8 Supercars to private equity for a $305,000,000 valuation. His credits and performance in world motorsport are uniquely recognized both in Australia and overseas.
Since 2014, he has served first as a Director of the AFL team the Gold Coast Suns and since 2016 as Chairman. He played a pivotal role in helping to create the AFL Hubs in Queensland last year when Covid hit and in bringing the Grand Final to Brisbane, for the first time outside of Melbourne, in its existence.
From 2013 until 2018, Tony and his partner Thea created a new start-up producing from the ground up five international touring Exhibitions, breaking new ground in exhibitions, concerts and events. With a huge range of clients from the Nelson Mandela Foundation of South Africa through to the Rolling Stones, iEC developed and designed global touring exhibitions which have won critical acclaim.
In late 2018, Tony and Thea returned to their original company, Cochrane Entertainment, to commission and undertake some exciting global work with IWEFO, offering unique global experience to sports and commenced representation in the Southern Hemisphere on SXSW. Cochrane Entertainment continues to work with projects in the Entertainment, Sport and media content space.
